Stop Lying to Yourself: God’s Word Doesn’t Bend for Your Feelings

So, I was scrolling through a Christian singles group when I came across an interesting post. A woman (who, mind you, didn’t really ask a question so much as throw this out there for feedback) shared that she was being pursued by an Arab man of another religion.
Naturally, I did what any curious person does—I went straight to the comments. And what I saw? Whew.
The Comments Were a Mixed Bag
Some men came through with straight-up scripture, no chaser.
A few women, however, took a different approach, saying things like, “It can work if you respect each other’s religions.”
And listen, that right there is where I need to step in and say something, because this isn’t just about dating—it’s about how we, as believers, sometimes lie to ourselves when it comes to God’s Word.
God’s Word Isn’t a Buffet
We do this thing where we pick and choose what parts of God’s Word we want to obey, as if He gave us a buffet line instead of a blueprint. We obey the parts that make us feel seen, blessed, or comforted. But when that same Word corrects us? Convicts us? Calls us to sacrifice? Suddenly we’ve got “questions” and “interpretations.”
But let’s be real: God is not confused. We are.
And instead of admitting that, we slap “God knows my heart” on top of disobedience and call it a day. But the truth? Yes, He knows your heart—and He also gave you His Word. You don’t get to bend it to fit your feelings or situations.
Hard Truth, Soft Reminder
If this stings, let it. That sting might be the Holy Spirit trying to reroute you. And if you’re the one giving advice that sounds good but doesn’t line up with scripture, it’s time to rethink that too.
Because love—the kind God wants for you—isn’t just about compatibility. It’s about covenant. And covenant starts with obedience, not opinions.
